Richard Ess '57

Richard D. Ess of Hastings passed on December 17th 2012 at the age of 76 leaving his grieving family. He was born and raised in Washington Heights. He married Carmen Mikulic of Croatia and moved to Hastings in 1969 where they raised their three children. Richard graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnical Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with further study at Berkeley. Richard and his friend Branko Mandic founded B&B Consulting, a management consulting firm. They worked in NYC and signed off on major construction projects including the Marriot Marquis Hotel on Broadway, the Equitable Building on 7th Avenue and Barneys. In his free time he enjoyed life by spending winter vacations with his family, mostly in the Caribbean, and playing handball in his old neighborhood. He was a passionate tennis player and an avid reader and was a steady customer in the Hastings Diner and library. Richard's motto was "A man's goal in life should be the attainment of wisdom and the perfection of character."
