Please pardon our classic look. We look forward to revealing this section's new look in July.

To receive a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering, you must complete 131 credits, which are broken down into five components:

  • Engineering core (50 credits)
  • Mechanical engineering electives (9 credits)
  • Mathematics, sciences and introduction to engineering (42 credits)
  • Humanities and social sciences (24 credits)
  • Free electives (6 credits)

Please note that you must earn an average of 2.0 GPA or better in mechanical engineering required courses, in addition to meeting the Institute requirement of a 2.0 GPA or better for graduation. Seniors with GPAs of 3.5 or better may take certain graduate courses as electives with approval from the departmental adviser.

Minors For Mechanical Engineering Majors

Aerospace Engineering Minor

The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering offers a minor in aerospace engineeringStudents pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering can satisfy the requirements for this minor by taking the four AE designated courses in place of the three ME and one free elective available in the program.

Interdisciplinary Minor in Nuclear Sciences and Engineering

You can receive a minor in nuclear sciences and engineering, which we offer in collaboration with the Department of Applied Physics. Students pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering may complete this minor by appropriately taking the five courses in place of the ME, Free, and/or Humanities electives available in the program.

BioMechanical and BioSystems Minor

The field of Biomedical Engineering is at the interface of engineering, life sciences, technology, and medicine. Biomedical engineers combine engineering principles and practice with medical and biological sciences to design and create equipment, devices, processes, computer systems, and software used in the medical, biotechnological, and pharmaceutical fields.

For more detail including required courses, pre-requisites, and contact information view the BioMechanical and BioSystems Minor handout.

Minor For Non-Mechanical Engineering Majors

The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering offers a minor in mechanical engineering for students in other majors. Please consult with your major academic advisor to understand how these courses may apply to the electives in your degree.
